Recently, a reader ran across that post and sent me the following email. I found it so interesting that I asked her permission to share. Here it is:

****

I just read your tip on removing vitamin e stains. There is surprisingly little information about this problem. I recently ruined about five new undershirts, and three nice sheets because I was using Vitamin E oil for a scar on my chest for a few days. I found that high-concentration Oxiclean saved about half of the stained clothes, but the rest never came out and I had to throw them away.

This happened to me again a few days ago – this time the E came from some sunscreen, and it stained the collar of a new $200 shirt. I tried the oxiclean, and it didn’t work. Then I saw your tip, and the hair spray suggestion gave me an idea. Hair spray contains a strong solvent. The strongest solvent I had at home at the time was Acetone. This is commonly available at hardware stores, and is used to thin fiberglass resin and remove paint. It’s pretty strong stuff, but surprisingly, its also the main ingredient in nail polish remover.

So, I rolled up the collar of my shirt, stuffed it in a cup, and filled the cup with acetone. I left it in there for about three hours, and when I pulled the collar out, the stain was completely gone. This was a cotton shirt with brightly colored stripes, and the acetone didn’t seem to affect the color at all, but its probably a good idea to spot-test for other fabrics.

One other interesting bit of trivia that I discovered about Vitamin E stains: The yellow stain often will not become visible until the item of clothing is bleached (ironically). In fact, bleach seems to “develop” Vitamin E stains in much the same way that a photographer use chemicals to develop an image on film. Before I discovered this, I was convinced that the stains were coming from the washing machine, because the shirts would go into the wash white, and come out with yellow stains. I finally did an experiment where I took a white wash cloth, and using a Q-tip, traced the word “test” on it in big letters using Vit E oil. The letters were invisible. I then poured straight bleach on the wash cloth, and within about 30 seconds, the letters were sharp and clear, as though I had written them in yellow food coloring!

So there it is - a solution to what must be a very common problem, considering how many skin-care products contain Vitamin E. If you can’t get Acetone from the hardware store, I’m guessing that plain nail polish remover should work just as well. Just make sure that acetone is listed in the ingredients. Thanks for the inspiration!

*****

Thank you, Robert, for the fascinating info. I know my readers will find it helpful!

Sleeping bags - fresh and sweet-smelling.

So, how can a family keep their sleeping bags from getting all musty smelling over the winter?

Page 228 in The Trouble with Tulip recommends the following:

First, store them in a cool, dry place like a closet - never the basement.

Second, don't roll them up too tightly or they won't have room to breath when you store them.

Finally, when to do store them slip a fabric softener sheet down inside.

Picnic anyone?

It's picnic time again. By the way, these are listed in detail on page 171 of Blind Dates Can Be Murder.

Today we'll talk about oil-stains. These stains are produced from products like auto grease, hair mousse and suntan lotion.

Start with a stain remover with enzymes such as Shout or Spray 'n Wash. Soak the stain and then launder as usual.

My assistant, Shari, uses dish detergent on vegetable and olive oil stains which 'mysteriously' appear her shirt when eating angel hair pasta and clam sauce. Just place the dish detergent (not dishwasher detergent) directly on the stain and let it sit a bit, then launder as usual.

Next time we'll talk about the tannin stains!

Let's talk about stains!

Stains fall into four simple categories

protein

oil-based

tannin

dye

We'll start with protein stains this week.

Protein stains (such as baby formula, eggs and urine) require cold water because hot water will actually cook the protein setting the stain even more!

So, be sure to use only cold water when washing out those protein stains.

Next week we'll tackle oil-based stain concepts!

"Your silver candlesticks. This could eventually corrode the finish.

Or, for a chandelier, remove the crystals if they're removable and hand wash them in warm water with a capful of vinegar and a drop of dishwashing liquid.

Vitamin E Stain

Hi folks,

Happy New Year to you all!

I thought you might enjoy this recent exchange with a reader, who ended up solving her own problem.

Q - I just squirted vitamin E oil on my blouse. Is their any way to remove the stain?

A- Hmmm...that's a new one on me! Sounds like a person I know who squeezed a capsule and it popped, shooting the liquid into her eye. Turns out, it was her dog's stool softener, which led to plenty of joikes (at least her eye wouldn't be constipated, etc.), but it ended up being pretty serious and actually burned her retina. She's fine now. Anyway, your note reminded me of that experience.

Any oil-based stain is always best removed with a professional stain-removal product such as Shout. You could also try rubbing in a little water that has been mixed with a dab of Dawn dishwashing liquid or similar (any of the ones that promise to draw grease away from the dishes).

Let me know if neither of these approaches work and I'll take a look at some of my reference books for you. Is it really oily, or is that just what it's called? Because that could make a difference in how to treat the stain.

Follow up email - Thanks for your suggestions. I sprayed it really good with Shout and let it set for a while, then checked it and it was still there, then I put salt on it and let it set for several hours. I could still see the stain, finally I sprayed it really good with hair spray and let that set for a few hours and it finally came out.

My final comments - I was glad to hear back and to learn that the stain finally did come out. Though I wouldn't recommend using salt and/or hairspray on all fabrics, I'm glad it really worked out in this situation. Way to go!

Help for Ceramic Tile Floors

Q - I have white ceramic tile floors with a shiny surface. To clean them I have to vacuum and then mop, but when I mop it leaves loose dirt, so then I have to revacuum. I need something fast that will leave them clean. Vinegar is o.k. but doesn't work too well on greasy spots such as food spills. Any suggestions?

A - Yikes, I hear white tile and I get a headache. No wonder you're going crazy--white anything is just asking for trouble. Anyway, the next time you clean the floors, try this:

First, you're doing the right thing by vacuuming before you mop.

Second, when you mop, use one bucket of plain water if the floor's not too dirty or two buckets if it is. In that case, the first bucket should have warm water, a drop of vinegar, and a drop of dish soap (for the greasy messes). The other bucket is your rinse bucket and should just have warm water. If the floor is really dirty, you may have to dump and refill those buckets before you're done.

After you have mopped (or mopped and rinsed) your floor, instead of that second vacuum, it would be better for you to dry the floor with some old towels. (If you've got good balance, do your knees a favor and "skate" around on them with your feet.) The towels will pick up the dirt that's left behind plus prevent any water spots from dulling the shiny surface.

Of course, make sure you've got good floor mats inside and outside of every single exterior door in your house, because that will prevent a lot of dirt from getting tracked inside in the first place. Also, you might want to put a nice basket beside each door and encourage family members to take their shoes off when they come inside. Good luck!

Does it Work?

Occasionally, I see an interesting tip from a legitmate source that I am tempted to post here. Still, I'm hesitant to suggest anything that I haven't first tried out myself. Today I spotted such a tip in Budget Travel Magazine, one that sounds too good to be true. I can't see how trying this might cause any harm (unlike certain stain-removal techniques, for example) so I am posting it here without testing first. If anyone tries this, please let us know if it actually worked!

According to a travel tip in Budget Travel, when you've been at the beach and are ready to get in your car, if you sprinkle your feet with baby powder, all of the clinging sand will fall off.

Anyone ever done this? DId it work? If I get to a beach before I see any responses, I'll be sure to try it myself and post the results here. (Though considering that it's November and I'm in Pennsylvania, I don't know how soon that's going to happen.)

Have a great week!

How can I freshen up my silk ties?

Problem: I work in a position that requires that I wear ties to work everyday. I remember you, Jess, and our lovely dinnertime conversation. But funny you should mention it...

I'm rearranging my office and trying to clear things out and I just ran across one last bag of Shout wipes attached to a bookmark advertising the Smart Chick Mystery series. I thought I had given them all out about a year ago, but this last little bag was hiding from me.

So if anyone else would like one of these bookmarks/Shout wipes, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope (no extra postage necessary) to:

Mindy Clark
PO Box 38
Dresher, PA 19025

and I'll send one to you. Make sure that somewhere in or on the envelope you write the word "Shout" so I'll know what you want. Looks like there's about 100 left, so I guess I should qualify this by saying "while supplies last". But not to worry--if you send me an envelope and I have no more of these, I'll send you another one of my little freebies: a packet of Creole seasoning (to get you in the southern spicy mood to read Whispers of the Bayou!)

Hope to hear from you soon!

Chewie did it again... knocked his water bowl over!

Jo's dog Chewie had a habit of turning over his water bowl in his excitement over being outside.

On page 256 of The Trouble With Tulip Joe had a great idea. Unfortunately, the deer have decided that it is their new resting spot and personal potty. Because our children our young, we are always out there when they are playing on the playground, however, we are constantly having to clean out the deer "waste." There is already a fence surrounding the playground, plus making any adjustments to the fence surrounding the yard are just out of the question for now. What can we do to keep the deer out of the playground and yard?

Thanks!
Sincerely, Kellie
----------------------------------------------------------
Hi Kellie,
Thanks for your question. To find an answer, I consulted a book called "Grandmother's Critter Ridder" by Dr. Myles H. Bader. He has several pages of all-natural deer deterrents, but I have narrowed down his suggestions to the ones that would be the most appropriate for keeping deer away from an outdoor play area.

The key seems to be this: Surround the area where you don't want the deer to go with things that smell of humans and/or house pets. Below are some examples of how you can do this, and I would suggest trying several of these idea simultaneously:
- drop used bars of soap into used pantyhose and hang them from the trees (not kidding!)
- sweep up hair cuttings from a local beauty shop and spread it on the ground or put the hair in dirty socks and hang from trees
- cut up an old dog or cat blanket and drop the pieces around the area.

Unfortunately, you'll have to keep re-doing these things after every 2 or 3 rainstorms, because the scents do wash away. If you have access to lots of human hair, you can actually dig a shallow trench circling the area where you don't want the deer to go and fill it with hair, almost like a moat. According to Dr. Bader, "This keeps the deer away and the birds have a ball using the hair for their nests. The hair is rich in nitrogen and can be worked into the soil after the deer season is over." So there you have it! Let us know how it goes.

Blessings,
Mindy

How do I get lipstick marks out of my shirts?

From The Trouble with Tulip, page 13:
Try rubbing in some vegetable oil and letting it sit. The noodles will keep your toes from touching as the polish dries, giving you a perfect finish every time!

Household Chat with Marlo Schalesky

Hello. Today I'm interviewing Marlo Schalesky who is the award winning author of six books, including her latest novel BEYOND THE NIGHT, which combines a love story with a surprise ending twist to create a new type of story. She has also had over 600 articles published in various magazines, had her work included in compilations such as Dr. Dobson’s Night Light Devotional for Couples, and is a regular columnist for Power for Living. Marlo recently earned her Masters degree in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and is currently working on more “Love Stories with a Twist!” for Multnomah-Waterbrook Publishers, a division of Random House. She owns her own construction consulting firm and lives in Salinas, California with her husband and four young daughters. Find out more about Marlo at http://www.marloschalesky.com/.

Q - Marlo, why do you think people like household hints?
A - Because most people like a clean house, but they don’t do household chores for fun. So hints that make things go easier, quicker, more efficiently give people the time to both enjoy their house and do other fun things too.

Q - Do you have a favorite and/or interesting household hint you'd like to share?
A - My favorite is ironing off tough stains from the carpet, using a hot iron and a clean rag. You put the clean rag on the carpet, and iron it – the stain transfers to the rag. Voila! Not more carpet spot. A professional carpet cleaner showed me that little trick and I’ve been using it ever since.

Q - What's your biggest housekeeping challenge?
A - Twin two-year-olds. I get a room picked up, they dismantle it. I clean a mirror or a glass tabletop, turn around, and there are a million little fingerprints all over it. I put away toys, and put away toys, and put away toys, and . . . you get the picture. And don’t even get me started on what the kitchen floor looks like after a meal. Yuck!

Q - If you could pass along one bit of cleaning/organizational advice to someone just starting out with their first home, what would it be?
A - Leave extra room in your closets, drawers, bins, cupboards for things you’ll buy later. And make sure it’s really easy to put things back where they belong without having to move other items first.

Q - How does your housekeeping style compare to that of your parents when they were your age?
A - My parents were most interested in having a spotless house for company. I just want to keep things picked up and organized for my own sanity. With four little kids, I’ve got enough crazy going on around here without adding household disarray to the list. So, I notice that the more wild things seem, the more I want to pick up, clean up, and organize . . .just so that something in my life can seem under control.

Thanks Marlo!
Readers, stay tuned for the next interesting interview.

Household chat with Maureen Lang

Hi Readers, Today I am interviewing Maureen Lang. Her booklist includes Pieces of Silver (a Christy finalist), Remember Me, The Oak Leaves. Coming in the fall/winter is My Sister Dilly.

Q - Maureen, Do you have a favorite and/or interesting household hint you'd like to share?
A - I'm not sure this tip is all that interesting, but I love vinegar. When my dog was a puppy and we were still in that fun stage of house training, I'd mix a little vinegar with water and go after the accidents. I read somewhere the strength of the vinegar overpowers the odor left by the pet, so the pet won't think that spot is their territory. It isn't, after all - it's yours, and the vinegar says so. Sure beats any other alternatives I can think of to stake territory!

Q - What's your biggest housekeeping challenge?
A - Dog hair. If there could be a way to make wigs out of dog hair, I could supply Dolly Parton for the rest of her life. (My dog is a blonde, too.)

Thanks for the laugh Maureen! Stay tuned next week for another great interview.

Household chat with Karen Ball

Hi Readers,

Today I'm interviewing Karen Ball who is the award-winning author of the Family Honor suspense series. Swept away from Louisiana bayou country as a child, Miranda Miller is a woman without a past. Now she has a husband and child of her own and a fulfilling job in a Manhattan museum. But she also has questions—about the tragedy that cut her off from family and caused her to be sent away, and about those first five years that were erased from her memory entirely. When she inherits her grandparents' antebellum estate, Miranda goes back to Louisiana for the first time as an adult. There, she soon finds herself plunged into a nightmare of unknown enemies, buried secrets, and priceless treasure.

RT Book Club Magazine says: "Top Pick! After all, they don't exactly run in the same social circles. But when she and Quentin uncover letters in the family vault written by Berrie Hamilton—one of Quentin'sancestors—Rebecca discovers that Quentin isn't the only one with a legacy to appreciate. Only Berrie's words can prepare Rebecca forthe dramatic turn her life is about to take.

To read a chapter from this exciting new title, sign up for ChapterAWeek at this link:
www.mindystarnsclark.com/contact.php
or to order the title go to Amazon.com.

Sharon Dunn

Hi Readers, today I'm interviewing Sharon Dunn who is the author five mysteries including book two in her Bargain Hunters mysteries, Death of a Six Foot Teddy Bear. This will help prevent clutter from taking over.

Q - Fill in the blank: I am to cleaning as a ____________ is to _______________.
A - I am to cleaning as a monkey is to getting a PHD in Physics.

Q - How does your housekeeping style compare to that of your parents when they were your age?

A - My mom spent her whole day cleaning and then fretting over how messy her house was. I refuse to do that. I have books to read, people to hug and when the sun is shining, I want to feel it on my face. None of that happens if you are cleaning the dust off of houseplants.

Thanks for your thoughts Sharon!
Readers, stay tuned for another author interview next time!

Robin Caroll

Today I'm interviewing Robin Caroll. Like me, she was born and raised in Louisiana, Robin Caroll is a Southern belle right down to her “hey y’all.” Her passion has always been to tell stories to entertain others. Robin’s mother, bless her heart, is a genealogist who instilled in Robin the deep love of family and pride of heritage—two aspects Robin weaves into each of her books. When she isn’t writing, Robin spends time with her husband of eighteen years, her three beautiful daughters, and their four character-filled cats at home—in the South. She gives back to the writing community by serving as President of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) for 2007 and 2008. An avid reader herself, Robin loves hearing from and chatting with other readers. Although her favorite genre to read is mystery/suspense, of course, she’ll read just about any good story. Except historicals! To learn more about this author of deep South mysteries of suspense to inspire your heart, visit Robin’s website at http://www.robincaroll.com/.

Robin's books include Bayou Justice-Oct 2007, Bayou Corruption, Bayou Judgment, Bayou Paradox-June 2008, Bayou Betrayal-January 2009, Framed!-February 2009, and Our Armor of God in Soul Savors for Women.

Now on to our interview!

Q - Robin, what is your biggest housecleaning challenge?
A - Finding the time to keep the house clean with 3 kids, a dog, 2 cats, and defending my writing time. I've learned to lessen my expectations.

Q - What is your favorite household hint?
A - A once-used dryer sheet is great for dusting--it "grabs" dust off tvs and ceramic tile counters and makes your room smell better. I also put a new dryer sheet in my bagless vacuum. As I clean the floor, I don't get that smell that comes into the air that seeps past the HEPA filter. I get a fresh smell. With a child that has extreme allergies, this is very helpful to me.

Thanks Robin!

Readers, please come back next week for another interesting interview!

Household Chat with Rachel Hauck

Today I'm interviewing Rachel Hauck, who is is a multi-published author living in Central Florida. Her current release is Sweet Caroline from Thomas Nelson.

Q – Rachel, what's your biggest housekeeping challenge?
A - Papers!! I just don't know what to do with papers or things I want to keep around for awhile. If I "file" them away, I forget about them. I also struggle with what to do with books. Otherwise, I'm neat and clean, but with neat stacks of papers and magazines on my desk.

Q – How does your housekeeping style compare to that of your parents when they were your age?
A - I'm very similar to my mom. I personally believe most of us emulate the environment we grew up in. If our parents were messy, we struggle with being messy. My mom was neat and organized and clean. So much of my home reflects her and the home she created for us. She used to turn on music to clean the house. I've not done that in awhile and think I might do that again.

Thanks so much, Rachel! Readers, check back soon for another exciting interview.

Household Chat with Gayle Roper

Today I'm interviewing Gayle Roper who has always loved stories, and as a result she's authored more than 40 books, most recently See No Evil and Caught Redhanded(Steeple Hill/Love Inspired Suspense). Fatal Deduction will be released in June, 2008, and Lost and Found in September, 2008. Gayle has won the Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award for Best Inspirational Romance and finaled repeatedly in both the RITAS and the Christys. Several writers conferences have cited her for her contributions to the training of writers. She enjoys speaking at writers conferences and women's events, reading and eating out. She adores her kids and grandkids, and loves her own personal patron of the arts, her husband Chuck. Visit her at http://www.gayleroper.com/

Q: Gayle, why do you think people like household hints?
A: We love household hints because we're always looking for a better, easier way to do this job that we generally dislike. It's like buying the latest diet book or trying the latest diet fad. Help me do this hard job in a less painful and boring way!

Q: Do you have a favorite and/or interesting household hint you'd like to share?

A: My best housekeeping tip is: grow your kids up and out of the house! We're empty nesters now, and it's amazing how much neater the house is. Of course it's less exciting, less interesting, and less ulcer-producing too.

Thanks for the chuckle, Gayle! Tricia was named Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference "Writer of the Year" in 2003. In 2005, her book Life Interrupted was a finalist for the Gold Medallion. Also in 2005, her novel Night Song won ACFW's Book of the Year for Long Historical Romance. In 2006, her novel Dawn of a Thousand Nights also won Book of the Year for Long Historical. She's written over 300 articles for national publications and hundreds of Bible Study notes for the Women of Faith Study Bible. Tricia lives in Montana with her husband and three kids where she homeschools, leads children's church, and mentors teenage mothers.

Q - Tricia, why do you think people like household hints?
A - We don't have time to spend HOURS on our home. Tips help us work faster and smarter.

Q - Do you have a favorite and/or interesting household hint you'd like to share?
A - Sharpie markers work GREAT for covering up scratches in wood. Just find a shade (brown) similar to your piece of furniture.

Q - What's your biggest housekeeping challenge?
A - I am always behind in 1) putting clean laundry away, 2) mail, and 3) sweeping my floors. They always seem dirty!

Q - If you could pass along one bit of cleaning/organizational advice to someone just starting out with their first home, what would it be?
A - Houseclean in short bursts ... don't wait for it to pile up. Dishes only take five minutes after a meal. It takes five minutes to wipe down a bathroom if you do it every other day. Also, if you're going to watch TV, then do something little besides, such as fold laundry or dust the living room.

Q - Fill in the blank: I am to cleaning as _____ is to ______.
A - The basketball is to the net. As much as I love days when I get a 3-pointer and everything is clean ... I settle for a layup down and then in small, fast spurts. (Can you tell high school basketball season just finished at our house?)

Q - How does your housekeeping style compare to that of your parents when they were your age?
A - My mom was EXTREMELY neat. Everything was perfect. I'm messier, but mostly because I homeschool and write. We have people around here 24/7.

Thanks so much, Tricia! Readers, be sure to check back soon for another exciting interview. And if, like Tricia, your floors always seem dirty, make sure you've got mats inside and outside every exterior door, as that really helps to cut the dirt. Also, think about getting a rechargeable vacuum cleaner that's light and easy to use, or at least a portable central vacuuming unit (like my SweepEze from Westinghouse that I profiled in a previous post.) I'm a big fan of whatever makes the job of floor-cleaning that much easier. Until next time…keep it clean!

Order door mats here

Order rechargeable vacuums here

Win a Box of Brand New Books!

This is a post from the Chapter-A-Week folks.

It's hard enough to find books that are just right for everyone. Check back often to see who pops up next!

Today, I'm interviewing Kristin Billerbeck, author of What a Girl Wants and The Trophy Wives Club.

Q - Kristin, why do you think people like household hints?
A - Because people are convinced there is one simple answer to hold their house together and all women secretly want to have Martha's house with Mary's heart.

Q - Do you have a favorite and/or interesting household hint you'd like to share?
A - Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. These things are like gold and I hoard them. They prevent repainting a wall, they get everything off of painted surfaces! I love them!

[Mindy's note: I love these too! To try them for yourself Order them here]

Q - What's your biggest housekeeping challenge?
A - Keeping up after four kids. It seems no matter how hard I work, someone is coming behind me leaving things along cleaned-up surfaces. Like their sole purpose in life is to obliterate flat surfaces.

Q - If you could pass along one bit of cleaning/organizational advice to someone just starting out with their first home, what would it be?
A - If no one ever taught you how to organize a home, hire a professional organizer. Learning the process helped me immensely. I was driving blind for fifteen years. Best $3000 I ever spent!

Q- Fill in the blank: I am to cleaning as _____is to_____.
A - I am to cleaning as fish are to bicycles.

Q - How does your housekeeping style compare to that of your parents when they were your age?
A - It doesn't. My mom is a neat freak.

Thanks for your fun and interesting answers, Kristin! Readers, be sure to check back soon for more Q&A with your favorite authors.

How do I dust lampshades?

Try a lint roller, the kind that's made with sticky paper that you peel and use. (Obviously, we don't get around to it all that often!) I even bought a long-handled scooper so they don't have to bend over or get their hands dirty, but it's still a thankless job that's never done well, if at all.

Yesterday, however, I walked into the family room while they were watching TV and plunked down twenty $1 bills. I said, 'Here's twenty bucks, just for you guys. Go outside and scoop the poop. When you're done, I'm going to go out and look around. For every poop I find, I'm deducting a dollar. Whatever's left when I'm finished, you get to keep.'"

Twenty dollars may seem a little steep for a job that takes just twenty minutes, but in their case my friend said it was money well spent. Apparently, the kids filled almost half of a paper grocery bag with doggy doo, missing only one that their mother could find. Nineteen bucks for a poop-free yard? I'd say that was priceless.

Chapters of the Week

Learning to Fly by Roxanne Henke

New mom, Susan Schaffer, looks down at her newborn daughter, Lily, and wonders if she has what it takes to be a great mom. However, here's a trick you can use to minimize their appearance in the meantime: Sand the rings down a little, then make a paste of cigarette ashes and vegetable oil to rub into the wood. As long as it's not too big of an area, this should nicely darken the wood nicely so the rings don't stand out as much. If it were me, I would call the toll free number that's probably listed on the medicine bottle and see if they have a suggestion! I'm always amazed at how many questions they're prepared to answer.

If that doesn't work, then follow the general rule of thumb for carpet stain removal: Start with the most gentle approach and work your way toward the more risky until something works. Of course, the nicer, newer, or more expensive carpet it is, the less risky you want to be! (In the past, if a stain is relatively small, I have stopped after the second level of treatment, gotten down on the floor with a pair of scissors, and snipped out the stained fibers instead.)

Anyway, according to one of my favorite resources, the book 2001 Amazing Cleaning Secrets by Jeff Bredenberg, you should attack carpet stains in this order:

1. Water or club soda
2. Mild soap and water
3. Ammonia and water OR Vinegar and water
4. Peroxide
5. I have been struggling with this myself lately. Beyond the obvious suggestions (back-friendly pillows and pads, gentle stretches, heat and ice, etc.), I have also come up with one more idea: When you check into a hotel, set up the ironing board out of the way, along a wall, and think of it as a table. This gives you a surface that is likely higher than the counters and other tables in the room. Use it for any sort of "standing" activity such as sorting your purse, writing a quick note, picking out your jewelry, or whatever. Some of my worst back problems come when I'm doing a quick, mindless task on a tabletop, bending just a little farther than my body would like for me to. The ironing-board-as-table idea helps prevent this from happening.

How do I clean an artificial tree?

Q - What is the best (and easiest way) to dust my fake tree, none of my methods have worked so far.
Signed,
Barking up the Wrong Tree

A – Dear Barking,

Go at it with a blow drier on the Cool setting and blow that dust away. If the plant is really dusty, you might want to do this outside!

If that doesn't work, you need to include water in the process, as shown:

- For a sturdy artificial tree, try rinsing the leaves with the hose (or inside with a handheld shower attachment)

- For a more fragile artificial tree, fill the tub with cool water, mix in a few drops of dish detergent, and then carefully immerse the plant into the water several times and gently swish it around. According to one of my favorite household books, 2,001 Amazing Cleaning Secrets by Jeff Bredenberg for Reader's Digest, you have to do the following multi-step process, for which you will need dishwashing liquid, water, a clean rag, paper towels, something heavy (like a small pile of books), plastic wrap or aluminum foil if your heavy item needs protecting from moisture, and a spray bottle (with plain water inside).

First, mix 1/4 tsp. dishwashing liquid with a quart of water, dip a clean rag into the solution, then use a blotting motion to work the solution into the stain. Blot with a clean, dry paper towel. Spray with the water. Blot again. Continue to spray and blot until the suds are all gone. Finally, spray one more time with water, but don't blot this time. Instead, lay a pad of clean, dry paper towels over the area, top the towels with the wrap or foil (if necessary), then top that with the heavy item. Let it sit like that until it's dry.

Once dry, if the stain is still there, start over again, but this time use 1/2 tsp. dishwashing liquid for the first step.

Once dry, if the stain is still there, try moistening the area with 3 % hydrogen peroxide, let it stand for an hour, then blot and repeat until the stain is gone. You don't have to rinse, but do dry the area by using the paper towel procedure described above.

Good luck!

We interrupt our regularly-scheduled broadcast...

No tip for today, instead, I want to take a moment to put in a plug for something called "ChapterAWeek". This is an online service for fiction fans, with one function: If you sign up, each week you will be sent the first chapter of a new inspirational fiction release. That way, you can "try before you buy", not to mention keep an eye on the latest and greatest from your favorite authors. This week's excerpt is from one of my mom's favorite authors, Stephanie Grace Whitson. Here's the blurb:

JACOB'S LIST by Stephanie Grace Whitson
Copyright 2007 Bethany House Publishers

When tragedy strikes, Jacob Nolan's estranged parents face the most difficult challenge of their lives. Their son's list of "things to accomplish before I settle down" won't be completed the way Jacob envisioned, but God has redemptive plans for Michael and Pamela Nolan, who come to realize that their son's list is about a lot more than youthful adventure. Jacob's List is a book about reconciliation against all odds.

To read a chapter from this exciting new title, sign up for ChapterAWeek at this link:

http://www.mindystarnsclark.com/contact.php

or to order the title go to Amazon.com.

I'll be posting a new ChapterAWeek blurb here each Monday. For a stronger treatment, you can also smear tomato paste all over your hair, let it sit for 5 minutes, then shampoo.

Just don't make the mistake I did and substitute V8 Juice for tomato juice. Because it is tomato-based, I thought it would be fine. It worked on the chlorine, sure, but when all was said and done and the juice was shampooed out, my hair was still full of vegetable pulp. Now I have the part and have had it replaced and there is duct tape stick stuff on the car. How can i get rid of it easily??

A - Tough question! Removing duct tape residue isn't usually that difficult, but the kicker here is that it's on a car—which means no caustic products that might damage the finish. I'm going to make a few suggestions, but you'll have to write back to let us know if you have success! If not, we'll take it up a notch and try something a little stronger. (The following products should be safe, but you might want to give a call to your local service department just to make sure they're okay for your car.)

I have three suggestions:

1. Saturate it with linseed oil, which is what the professionals use to get tar off of cars. Let the oil sit for a minute, then dampen a soft rag with more of the oil, and rub the area until the sticky stuff comes off. You can also try vegetable oil, though it may not work as well.

2. Put a dab of peanut butter on a soft rag and rub it around and around the area until the sticky stuff begins to roll off. (When removing tape residue, sometimes peanut butter works like a charm; sometimes it doesn't work at all.)

3. You might try the method recommended for removing bumper stickers: Use a blow drier to heat the sticky stuff, then use a credit card or something else with a flat edge to gently scrape it off. Just be careful of that finish!

So there you have it. Let us know how it turns out. And thanks for a great question!

How can I get out stubborn grass stains?

Removing grass stains can be difficult. Following package directions, melt the chips in a big bowl in the microwave. When chocolate is completely melted, quickly stir in the noodles until thoroughly mixed. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture into small heaps on waxed paper and allow them to cool. These confections may look a little strange but they taste great.

Some variations: try using other types of chips, such as butterscotch or white chocolate or peanut butter. To make a Christmas version, use white chocolate, and after you drop the mixture onto the waxed paper, sprinkle them with red and green sparkle candy (available in the baking aisle of your grocery store.) Move quickly, however, because the candies won't stick to the chocolate once it has hardened. Enjoy!

How I can keep steel wool pads from making such a globby, rusty mess on the sink between uses?

To keep a steel wool pad from rusting, simply put it in a plastic bag and stick it in the freezer. She always chokes.

Here's the method I used, and it worked like a charm! Just do it with a fun attitude, making a game of it so that your child will relax.

Go to the store and buy a box of "Nerds" candy. Back at home, have your child dump out the Nerds into a large baking pan or platter and then sort them into piles by size. (The candies range from miniscule dots to clumps as big as capsules.) Get a big glass of water and show your child how to put the tiniest Nerd in her mouth, take a sip of the water, and swallow without chewing. Once she can do it with the tiniest one, move up to the next size and try again. Continue doing this until she has worked her way up to the biggest Nerd of all. If she can swallow the biggest size, she's ready to swallow pills as well.

I wouldn't recommend swallowing an entire box of Nerds whole, as that might result in a tummy ache. But she will probably only need to do this 5 or 6 times until she has worked up to the biggest, and that small of a quantity shouldn't cause any problems (unless she's allergic or something). Good luck!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wwwtipsfromtulipcom.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-can-i-help-my-child-learn-to.html' title='How can I help my child learn to swallow pills?
